Call for Artists – winter art market

Open until November 25, 2023

Drop off for the winter art market is now open! Artists may bring their work into the gallery up until Saturday, November 25th. For those looking to shop, the market itself will run November 30 – December 24, 2023

🌲 What is the Winter Art Market?
For the month of December the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre will be transforming our entire public gallery into a month long art market. Unlike many markets you won’t have to stand behind a stall all day to sell your work, our gallery does all the work for you. For those looking to purchase, pieces can be taken home right away making the Winter Art Market a great way to find original, local, handmade gifts.

🌲 What can I sell in the Winter Art Market?
All our members are encouraged to submit work in various sizes and mediums. Originals, merchandise, crafts and prints are all welcome. In the past we’ve had stockings, mittens, pottery, original art, blown glass, jewelry and more.
Not a member? Head to our website to become one today!
Please note, due to licensing issues we are unable to sell any alcohol or marijuana related items.

🌲 How do I submit work?
Bring your items into the centre on or before November 26th. We have room to store excess work so we can re-fill things as they sell. Drop off is during our opening hours: 12pm – 6pm Wednesday to Friday and 10am – 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Heads up, to sell work in our gallery you must be a member. Becoming a member is incredibly simple and can be done when dropping off work.

🌲 Why sell you work at RVAC?
There are lots of reasons but the biggest bonus is that selling through our gallery is simple, minimal effort and has a very approachable commission rate with no upfront fees. It’s a fantastic opportunity for established artists, emerging artists and crafters alike.

Bonus: our community will be filled with all the local talent our artists have to offer.

Exhibiting with us

Exhibitions are showcased in our gallery for approximately 4 weeks. The gallery is situated at the entrance to town at the first roundabout, with our building being one of the first you see as you enter our city. With an outdoor garden & picnic space, private artist studios, educational art workshops, community woodshop and pottery studio, and kids summer camps our walls are always bustling with activity from locals and visitors alike.

Our gallery opening events have between 65 – 300 guests coming to see the art and meet the artists, along with refreshments for purchase and live music.

We encourage you to have your work for sale but it is not mandatory for having a show at our gallery. We take a 20% commission for the gallery on all works sold.

The Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre is unable to pay artist’s fees at this time. We also offer a reduced commission rate of 20% and aim to provide additional services wherever possible (please see above).

While we do not pay artist fees, we can help you with letters of support for grant applications. Please contact us if you are interested in seeking out funding and granting opportunities. We are actively working towards our goal of paying full CARFAC-RAAV fees, but unfortunately we’re not there quite yet.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to everyone. We pride ourselves on showcasing local Revelstoke and Kootenay artists in our gallery as well as bringing artists from outside our community into our town. We generally try to have a good mix of artists from different communities and a variety of mediums. In the past we have had artists from Revelstoke, the Kootenays, B.C., across Canada, and the USA. We are open to artists internationally as well.

Application Review

Our applications are reviewed by our exhibition committee – a group of artists, photographers and educators within our community that have experience curating classic gallery shows and eclectic out of the box style interpretations of a gallery. The final decision, aided by the exhibition committee, comes down to our executive director.

Any further questions can be directed to our gallery administrator: info@revelstokeartgallery.ca

The Galleries

The Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre hosts Revelstokes only public art gallery that displays up to 25 shows per year throughout our main gallery and three side galleries. Situated in the old RCMP building, the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre has character complete with previously used jail cells in our back programming area. Our main gallery hosted Revelstoke’s courthouse and the judges chambers.

This gallery, through countless volunteer, staff and community hours, has now been home to several hundred exhibitions with local artists, Kootenay artists, artists across the province and beyond.

The Main Gallery

The Main Gallery is our most sought after room with the largest space it commands attention. This is the space we offer most often to established professional artists. This gallery lends itself well to group shows or to individuals with sculpture or bigger works.

Floor Area: 23 x 30 feet

Gallery Height: 11 feet

Gallery One

Gallery One is the first room you enter off of our main gallery, closest to our gift shop. This is the largest of our three side galleries. We recently removed the slat wall from this gallery which opened this room up to more hanging options and gave the whole space a wider feel.

Floor Area: 15 x 15 feet

Gallery Height: 8 feet

Gallery Two

Gallery two is the middle of our side galleries. This is a smaller intimate space and is perfect for the up and coming artist, or the artist whose body of work they wish to show is smaller. This gallery works well for small scale installation work.

Floor Area: 15 x 9 feet

Gallery Height: 8 feet

Gallery Three - Sophie Atkinson Gallery

Gallery three is named after the founder of the Revelstoke Art Group and integral part of the artistic community of Revelstoke, Sophie Atkinson. This gallery is the farthest from the entrance with leading light from the main gallery.

Floor Area: 14 x10 feet

Gallery Height: 8 feet
