Take a deep breath… and step into a familiar dreamscape…
For Jolene, making art is an entry point into the present moment. At times, life can feel like a rollercoaster…the ups and downs are the only constant, change and evolution is inevitable. Finding a practice that can ground you in the present moment is a true gift. In preparation for this exhibit – Mackie has been focusing on the projects and processes that light her up, and bring joy into the act of creation. In this collection that looks like vibrant colour, glitter, holographic shimmers, and a curious investigator exploring surreal dreamscapes…both two dimensional, and three dimensional!
Illusion has always been a spark of inspiration for Mackie. The illusion of depth and dimension on a flat surface…and now the illusion of weightlessness in sculptural work. This sense of questioning reality is a significant element in this body of work, which is reflected in the curiosity of the imagery itself.
Who is that robot character? This character serves as an entry point for viewers. If you relate to the introspective and adventurous qualities of this character you may just see a bit of yourself in there too. For Mackie, this character is a muse who has been introducing her to these increasingly surreal dreamscapes. One feature of this character is its ambiguity…it is neither old nor young, male or female…simply an icon of a vessel exploring its world.
