“Shantael Sleight (b. 1975, Edmonton, AB) is a contemporary Canadian painter based in Victoria, BC. Since completing her honours BFA in 2002 from the Alberta University of the Arts (PKA Alberta College of Art & Design) she has maintained a studio practice and has exhibited publicly and privately throughout Canada. Shantael’s artwork focuses on the human experience instantiated in nature, as a way to explore themes of ephemerality, impermanence, abundance and nuance.” (Excerpt taken from Shantael Sleight’s website)
Excerpt from Artist Statement:
“Mothering explores this nuance and the complexities of human imperfection as part of a life-long relationship with giving out and taking in. In my exploration of this topic, I invited a community of women to share their experience of mothering in relationship with themselves, other beings, and nature. I received an outpouring of honest stories and words that included compassion and acceptance, struggle, grief, succour and frustration. It is within these contradictions that I explored my own relationship with mothering.”
