Excerpt from the Artist Statement:
“It all started with a conversation…
Some time last year, as I was working away on a watercolor painting of a peony, I brought it to the living room to show my partner (who is also begrudgingly my personal art critic). He told me it was nice, but in his opinion, he prefers oil paintings to watercolor or other mediums. I went back to my art room to continue working on my piece, and as I worked away thoughts started going through my head: What type of medium do most people like? How many different mediums are there? Do most people know the difference between them? How many have I personally tried? How many more do I want to try for myself? Thus, the spark of an idea came to me for an exhibition; one that could be educational, and maybe have others asking themselves what mediums are their favorites?
“I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” is based solely around the peony flower, as the watercolor painting that started it all is of a peony. I of course wanted to try every medium I could, which I’m sure every other artist out there could identify with. I started out with a couple that I have tried before and then set my mind free to come up with more ideas that didn’t just involve paint and paper/canvas. Over half of the types of mediums in this show are ones that I have never used before, and there was a lot of learning that I had to do along the way.”
